Something randomly popped into today’s mental headspace–an exercise I had read about somewhere, or maybe I heard it on a podcast, which somehow stuck to my unconscious, and today manifested itself and beckoned my ADHD mind to follow it.
The exercise instructs you to do the following:
List all the pivotal stories of your life in a timeline on a sheet of paper–just a quick title, summary, or even a word.
Then, take a sweet little gander at that effstorm, and…
I don’t really remember the purpose of the exercise. But today I tried it for myself, and found it personally to be depressing, encouraging, and thought-provoking.
I think because sometimes I am way too on top of my own eyeballs in order to see myself objectively.
“Take a good look in the mirror” is advice so cliched that its crucial lesson is dreadfully overlooked.
But when you do this exercise, when you write down the timeline of your life onto a sheet of paper and hold it out in front of you and look at it as something apart from yourself, it literally gives you a new perspective.
And a new perspective can assuage vague fears, bring creative solutions, and help crystallize intuitions.
So I encourage you to try this out, and let me know how it goes.
And as you assess your life, and look back on it over the years, you may also start thinking about the future, and the legacy you’ll leave behind once you’re gone.
As your estate planning attorney, I can help you create a legacy plan that puts your fears to rest, buttons up loose ends, and makes sure your wishes are carried forth just right long after you’re gone.
